Q&A about Sensitive Facial Skin

What's Coenzyme Q10?

Found in all body tissue, Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone) is very important for cells' energy supply. Proven to fight premature skin aging, Coenzyme Q10 is skin's own anti-oxidant. Human Coenzyme Q10 has a specific chemical structure (which differs from microorganisms, plants and lower animals). We biotechnologically reproduce the Q10 found in Eucerin® products with the help of yeast. Since this Q10 has the exact chemical structure as body's own, your skin can absorb and metabolise it easily.

What happens when skin ages and how can you slow it down?

Beginning at age 25, skin's natural aging process becomes visible to us with the appearance of our first wrinkles. Our skin's regeneration process slows down, collagen, elastin and lipid production drops. External factors also influence aging. Environmental stress, UV exposures, ozone and air pollution lead to the formation of free radicals in the skin. These aggressive molecules react with the skin's own building blocks causing cell damage with visible effects, such as dryness, a feeling of tightness and premature wrinkling. Skin ages at a faster pace (prematurely) depending on your personal lifestyle. Not getting enough sleep, a lot of stress, smoking and spending a lot of time in the sun can all cause premature skin aging. Sensitive skin can also age more quickly.

Anti-oxidants found naturally in the skin, such as Vitamin E or skin's own Coenzyme Q10 can intercept free radicals. Your skin may not contain enough of these substances on its own and that's why you should supplement it by applying skincare products.

We recommend Eucerin® Q10 Active Anti-Wrinkle products specially designed for sensitive skin. In addition to Q10, they also contain shea butter, as well as vitamins E, C & H (those important free radical scavengers). With regular use, Eucerin Q10 Active reduces the appearance of wrinkles in 5 weeks. Q10 Active Night also contains vitamin A to help improve skin regeneration through the night. Ideal for the delicate skin around the eyes, Q10 Active Eye Cream contains cell-protecting UV filters (SPF 6-8). It's also suitable if you wear contact lenses. For daily sun protection, we recommend Eucerin® Q10 Active Fluid with SPF 15 to protect against sun-induced premature skin aging.

All Eucerin® Q10 products are fragrance and colourant free. Their intense yellow color comes naturally from Q10. They are also non-comedogenic (won't clog pores).

What's shea butter?

A natural, plant-based fat, shea butter is obtained by refining the seeds or kernels of the West African plant Butyrospermum Parkii (Bassia Parkii, Illipe parkii: from the Sapotaceae family). Butyrospermum grows in tropical Africa and is cultivated in the Sudan, Chad and Brazil. Indigenous people use it as a cooking fat, for soap, cosmetic purposes and illuminating oil. The fruits from the B. parkii also provide gutta-percha, a type of latex.

At room temperature, it is a soft, off-white to yellow-colored resin-like fat with an aromatic taste. Its chemical makeup is 6% palmitic acid, 41% stearic acid, 49% oleic acid and 4% linolenic acid. The high content of unsaturated fatty acids makes shea butter an excellent moisturiser. In concentrations between 2% and 5%, shea butter is used for elegant cosmetic facial skincare products, hand moisturising lotions, lipsticks, make-up and special products for sensitive dry skin.

How to take care of redness prone skin?

If you suffer from redness prone skin, we recommend the Eucerin® Anti-Redness range. All products contain a skin soothing extract from the licorice root. Begin with gentle cleansing. If you are using prescription medication, this step is particularly important because cleansed skin allows it to better absorb. Avoid loofahs or scrubbing.

You should also use sufficient sun protection because UV exposure can further worsen symptoms. Particularly well-suited for immediately concealing and reducing skin redness is Eucerin® Anti-Redness Neutralising Day Fluid SPF15. Its green pigments, skin-relieving licorice extract and high UVA/B protection, helps protect your skin from sun-exposure and visibly reduces redness. Please use sparingly, distributing from the middle of your face outwards and gently covering transition areas. It works well under make-up.

Studies have demonstrated excellent skin compatibility and effectiveness for redness prone skin. Visible improvement in the skin's condition was proven after only four weeks.

All Eucerin® Anti-Redness products are fragrance-free and non-comedogenic (won't clog pores)

What ingredients and colorants are used in Eucerin® Anti-Redness products?

Licorice Extract is a naturally soothing substance from the Glycyrrhiza Inflata root. The green color pigments are stated in accordance with INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) with the following colour index numbers:

CI 77288: Chromium Oxide Green (Cr2O3)

CI 77289: Chromium Hydroxide Green (Cr2O3·nH2O).

CI 77007 : Ultramarines (e.g. Al6Na8O24S2S)

CI 77492: Iron Oxides (HFeO2 · nH2O)

and Titanium Dioxide as a white pigment and physical sunscreen.

Are all facial skin products suitable for the eye area?

Products specifically developed for the eye area contain special lipid components with a very low spreading capacity to make sure they do not reach the eyes' conjunctiva (mucous membrane that lines the exposed portion of the eyeball and inner surface of the eyelids) and cause tears or burning. These ideal lipid components are usually used only in special eye products.

What Eucerin® products are best suited for combination skin types?

Having dry skin (for example, on your cheeks) and oily skin in the T-zone is actually quite common. You probably thought oily skin, blemishes and acne would go away once you headed into adulthood. Unfortunately, that's often not the case. Hormone fluctuations induced by puberty, pregnancy and stress change the way the sebaceous glands react to testosterone. As a result, the glands produce more sebum (oil). This oil plugs the skin follicles, bacteria begin to grow and the area becomes inflamed. The combination of these (excess oil, irregular removal of dead skin cells and bacteria) leads to blemishes and acne, symptoms of which include pimples, blackheads, dilated pores, shiny or irritated areas.

Consistently following a daily skincare regimen can help balance both the dry and oily areas. If your skin remains very dry in certain areas (such as your cheeks), you can use a moisturising cream after cleansing. We suggest Eucerin Sensitive Facial Skin Hydro Balance or Dry Skin 5% Urea Face Cream.

As a daily moisturiser with sun protection, try Eucerin® Q10 Active Fluid. This light, oil-free formula is ideal for more oily skin. With coenzyme Q10 and SPF 15, it helps fight premature skin aging. Eucerin products are fragrance-free and non-comedogenic (so, they won't clog pores).

What is a W/O/W emulsion?

Patented by Beiersdorf, W/O/W is a production procedure that facilitates three-phase emulsion. This technology ensures an especially sophisticated distribution of the watery phases in the product, which makes sure your skin stays moisturised over a long period of time. In clinical tests, we were able to prove increased moisturising of the skin even 24 hours after the product was last used.
