A typical sign of premature skin ageing (photo-ageing)
are wrinkles on face and hands. People with photosensitive skin are
particularly prone to this. The skin can be subdivided into skin types
I-IV depending on the photosensitivity.
Wrinkle formation is dependent on skin type.
People with skin types I and II, i.e. fair-skinned people who tend
to burn easily, are much more sensitive to sunlight and at higher
risk of skin damage through UV radiation than people with skin types
III or IV. These people have a moderately fair or dark complexion
and rarely or never burn. People with skin types I and II develop
deep wrinkles significantly more frequently because they are caused
by the effect of UV radiation. However, the formation of finer lines
is not correlated with skin type; these are simply signs of natural
ageing. |

Photo-ageing denotes the premature
skin ageing or chronic light damage to the skin triggered by UV radiation |

Pigmentation types: The individual sensitivity
to UV radiation and the development of solar erythema is determined
by the thickness of the stratum corneum and the pigment content of
the skin. Among Europeans, 4 groups of pigmentation types have been
defined. |

Early determination of the skin type is useful for
preventing premature skin ageing with deep wrinkling. This can be
done, for example, by regular use of products containing UV-filters. |

Signs of photo-aged skin
The cause of wrinkling is damage to the dermis
by UV radiation. UVA rays play a major role, penetrating the deep
dermal layers. UVA rays change the elastic fibres in the dermis, contributing
to solar elastosis. The formation of free radicals is also promoted.
These, too, can cause tissue damage.
Prematurely aged skin that has been damaged by UV radiation is characterised
by deep wrinkling and inelastic, slack skin tissue.
Generally speaking, people with skin types I or II should avoid UV
radiation and protect the face in particular from the effect of UV
radiation with appropriate sun protection products. |

Solar elastosis
is the term used to describe degeneration of the elastic fibres in
the skin through UV radiation.

SUMMARY:
Products containing ingredients such as coenzyme Q10, which
supply the skin cells with energy and reduce existing wrinkles,
are ideal for facial skin showing the first signs of fine wrinkles,
as well as for skin prematurely aged by UV radiation. The use
of products that also contain a sun protection factor is particularly
important for the face. |
