Correct
usage of sunscreens
At the beach
A frequent scenario is that sunscreen is applied and rubbed on only
after arrival at the beach. However, sunscreens need at least 30 minutes
to develop their protective potential, as the chemical filters must
first bond to the horny layer. The consequence for the user is a sun
erythema, despite the application of a sunblock. It is most important
for people with skin types I - III to apply a sunscreen at least 30
to 45 minutes before direct exposure to the sun.
Shadow as sun
protection?
The belief that shade or a beach umbrella can guarantee complete protection
from UV radiation can have a painful sunburn as a consequence. The
reason is that scattering of shorter wavelengths is very pronounced,
so that the skin can receive a very excessive dose of UV radiation
without direct exposure to sunlight. The "shadow rule: If your shadow
is shorter than you are, then there is a danger of UV-induced skin
damage.
Water - protection
by cooling?
The widely held belief that being under water protects from UV radiation
is a misconception: Even at 1 meter beneath the surface the intensity
of UVB radiation is almost 50% of the total, so that a sun erythema
can occur even there. The cooling effect can also mask pain.
SUMMARY:
A suitable protection from the sun must take into account skin
pigmentation type, location, duration and intensity of UV exposure.
Adequate protection against UVA and UVB radiation is especially
important for those extremely sensitive to the sun. |
