Armpits

Due to the high number of sweat glands, occlusion and increased sweat secretion, the pH of the armpits is 6.5, higher than the normal 5.5 pH of the skin. In this special environment, certain bacteria populate and thrive on the skin producing strong smelling substances through metabolisation of sebum and sweat, which have difficulty evaporating.

Action of Deodorants
Deodorants can actively inhibit body odor and its production through a variety of means:

  • Antiseptics hinder the growth of odor producing bacteria
  • Antiperpirants reduce sweat secretions
  • Certain ingredients bind with odor producing substances
  • Fragrances mask body odor

Deodorants should not only be effective, but also skin compatible. This is especially important when the barrier function of the skin is already reduced by a sensitivity, psoriasis or neurodermatitis. In this case, deodorants with alcohols and perfumes should not be used.
