The Skin's Lipids

Epidermal lipids create the cement which holds the horny cells together (brick & mortar model). They are particularly important for the barrier function of the skin because their composition determines the invulnerability of the permeability barrier. Sebum (sebaceous fat) and epidermal lipids are also important for the skin's moisture balance. The loss of lipids from the skin leads to a change in the hydrolipid film and the barrier lipids. The skin becomes dry, rough and flaky. Lipid-deficient facial skin tends to wrinkle prematurely. Skin suppleness decreases, the barrier function is impaired, and transepidermal water loss increases. Lipid-deficient sensitive skin needs natural and skin-related lipids, including cholesterol and free unsaturated fatty acids.

Lipid loss is caused, for example, by harsh cleansing with soap.
