Mature Skin

Chronological age does not need to determine the condition of mature skin. Environmental factors play a central role. External influences leading to premature skin aging include:

  • UV Exposure
  • Smoking & Alcohol
  • Climate & Weather

Internal factors determine the normal biological process of aging, which includes:

  • Diminished cell regeneration
  • Reduced sebaceous and sweat gland activity
  • Lower estrogen production

Skin's structure depends upon lipids from the sebaceous and sweat glands, without which the skin becomes dry and chapped. It then reacts more sensitively to cleansers, whose use also removes more lipids from the skin. As a result, skin becomes rough, cracked, taut and may itch. Estrogen has a beneficial effect on the skin"s moisture balance, but is reduced in menopause. This leads to structural changes in the skin.

As we age, the subcutaneous fatty tissue thins, the connective tissue loses its fibrous structure and water-binding capacity. Elastic fibres degenerate, causing wrinkles. Borders between the individual layers of the epidermis become blurred, cells shrink and skin becomes thinner.
