What is urea?

Urea is an active ingredient that has been widely used since the 1970s. Eucerin was one of the first brands to offer Urea-based solutions for dry skin.

It's one of several Natural Moisturising Factors (NMFs) in skin, which all work to pull water into the outermost layers of skin.

What is urea used for?

Urea and other NMFs bind in water and relieve dryness, scaliness and itchiness. It also supports the exfoliation of excessive skin and also prevents keratinisation.

The Eucerin UreaRepair PLUS range offers those with dry skin various concentrations of urea (ranging from 5% to 10%), other NMFs, ceramides and gluco-glycerol.

Is urea safe for skin?

Urea is safe for topical use, though it can cause skin irritation or an allergic reaction.

What is urea made of?

Urea is made synthetically in a lab by heating ammonium carbamide in a sealed container. The heat dehydrates the compound and forms urea, a crystal-type substance.
