Medical skin science that shows

For Eucerin, understanding skin is key to every single project and effort. Each type of skin is different and is exposed to different factors. Eucerin’s extensive research is therefore based on how skin functions, changes and reacts – and how to translate these learnings into effective and highly targeted dermo cosmetic products. This is the foundation for Eucerin’s unparalleled scientific dedication.

The knowledge of skin functions as foundation for innovation

Eucerin dedicates all of its passion and expertise to skin. Pioneering innovations, outstanding quality, and excellent compatibility are at the core of the brand and underpin the quality of its products worldwide. Providing advanced solutions that work for all of skin’s requirements is Eucerin´s commitment. Research & Development plays a key role in this from the start. The Eucerin approach to research, development and testing is part and parcel of the holistic philosophy for skin science that shows.

In-depth knowledge of human skin

All of Eucerin´s dermo cosmetic skin care products are based on in-depth knowledge of the physiology of human skin. Only understanding how skin functions, together with how it reacts to the increasing effects that it is exposed to, ensures the development of advanced dermo cosmetic products is appropriate to its diverse requirements, whatever its specific needs may be. Finding effective and safe ingredients for the products, so that the health of skin is protected and sustained, is the basis of Eucerin´s systematic research.

Illustration of skin and its layers

Eucerin´s scientists are dealing with a layer that is approximately 0.1 mm thick – the epidermis, the visible layer of the skin. This delicate tissue is in a constant state of renewal and can show all kinds of problems. Skin is not just skin. We talk about different skin types that can, for example, be normal, dry, oily or combination. Yet external factors (diet, climate, exposure to sensitisers in cleansing agents, harsh solvents, or certain fragrances) or internal factors (hormones, emotional state, diseases) will affect the skin and may cause a problem. This is what makes each and every skin different and unique, with its own history or changing state. But no matter what age, what genetic fingerprint or condition a specific skin may have, Eucerin research seeks to find the right caring solution for it.

People behind the science

The Eucerin expertise is concentrated in Hamburg, located in the Beiersdorf headquarter. Beiersdorf opened an expanded international centre for research and development here. To learn from the skin, more than 500 Beiersdorf scientists are decoding the complex processes that occur in it.

They are learning to understand the metabolic processes that take place from the skin in its entirety as an organ down to individual skin cells and are developing efficient active ingredients – both those found in the skin and from other sources, to support the natural processes in the skin so that it stays looking healthy for longer.

Read more about the search for these so-called “key-actives” in the article “Finding solutions”.

Eucerin Skin Research is striving to find out about the specific triggers of skin problems and is constantly evaluating and finding effective ways to protect it. It will draw from sciences such as human dermatology, molecular biology, bioengineering or chemistry; and in finding solutions, the most innovative scientific methods available are applied. This comprehensive approach, with all of the interdisciplinary scientists working in-house and constantly exchanging the latest findings is one of the most recognised in the world of dermo cosmetics.
