What is lactic acid?

Lactic acid is a water soluble alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). AHAs are organic compounds and in cosmetics they offer many benefits for the skin.

In the human body, lactic acid assists in glucose production and cell respiration. It is commonly referred to in relation to exercise because the concentration of lactic acid in the blood increases.

What does lactic acid do for skin?

Lactic acid helps to smooth the appearance of fine lines. This ingredient also makes skin look and feel brighter, while improving the skin's ability to naturally retain moisture. It also increases cell turnover with gentle exfoliation.

How to use lactic acid

Since lactic stimulates collagen for firmer younger-looking skin, its a great choice for anti-ageing treatments.

Lactic acid can also be used to treat the symptoms of blemish- and acne-prone skin, as it acts as a keratolytic agent to unclog pores.

This ingredient is commonly used in products formulated for "chicken skin" (keratosis pilaris) which tends to appear on the back of your arms or legs.

When to use lactic acid

Apply a thin layer of lactic acid in your daily evening routine, after toners and before moisturising. Unless your doctor says otherwise, don't use this product more than once a day. Always apply an SPF during the day.

Is lactic acid safe?

This is safe to use in skincare. Lactic acid can also be used during pregnancy. However, while it's a milder AHA exfoliant you shouldn't use lactic acid too frequently because over-exfoliating can impact your skin's natural barrier.

Try patch testing first before using a new active serum, as chemical peels can cause adverse reactions. When using lactic acid look out for symptoms including redness, burning, itching, swelling or noticeable peeling.
