When trying to prevent or reduce premature skin ageing it can be difficult to know which products and ingredients will make a real difference. Different age groups will benefit from different active ingredients, so it is definitely not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to ageing skin.

Eucerin’s expertly formulated Hyaluron-Filler products are specifically designed to target the causes of skin ageing. Here we explain how routines should differ for different age groups.

Why do I need a skincare routine?

A dedicated skincare routine will keep your skin healthy and protect it from damaging external influences like the sun, air pollution and extreme climates.

Whilst people in their 30s might be concerned about fine lines and dull skin, those in their 40s might care more about deeper wrinkles and age spots. Then as you get to your 50s you may want to target loss of volume in the dace and reduced skin elasticity.

All age groups will differ but it is important to opt for products that specifically target your skin concerns, whether that be fine lines, forehead wrinkles, a loss of elasticity or sagging skin. ‘Anti-ageing’ is a broad term which can be broken down into a number of skincare goals.

Dermatologist-recommended skincare routine for 30s

As we reach our 30s, we will start to notice the initial signs of ageing skin. Fine lines might start to appear in areas where our skin is thinner, like the forehead, or moves more due to facial expressions, like around the eyes (crow’s feet) or mouth (marionette lines). We also might experience some hyperpigmentation and dullness to our skin from years of sun exposure.

1. Cleanse (AM/PM)

A gentle face wash will help keep skin protected from unnecessary stress or stripping when cleansing each day. The Eucerin DermatoClean Cleansing Gel effectively removes dirt and impurities with a rich creamy texture that is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

2. Serum (AM)

Follow your cleanse up with our 10% Vitamin C Serum. Vitamin C works to brighten and smooth skin’s texture, whilst the hyaluronic acid plumps fine lines to visibly reduce their appearance, adding a hydrated glow to skin complexion. It’s fast-absorbing and will instantly add radiance and strength to the skin.

3. Moisturise (AM/PM)

Follow up with the rejuvenating Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler Day Cream SPF 30. This anti-ageing day cream uses three key ingredients for a 3x anti-ageing effect:

  • Mixed molecular hyaluronic acid: works to fill and plump wrinkles
  • Saponin: antioxidant power neutralises free radicals and stimulates our natural hyaluronic acid production by up to 256%
  • Enoxolone: decreases the degradation of hyaluronic acid by 50%

As well as anti-ageing benefits the SPF 30 cream offers sun protection to help prevent sun damage and photoageing.

For your nighttime routine, opt for the Hyaluron-Filler Night Cream. With all the benefits of our day cream it also contains intense moisturiser Dexpanthenol, which supports the skin’s regeneration process overnight.

Dermatologist-recommended skincare routine for 40s

As we reach our 40s the early signs of ageing might have developed into deeper wrinkles and uneven skin tone, placing more importance on shedding dead skin cells and supporting cell turnover.

1. Cleanse (AM/PM)

Always start your routine with a cleanser to ensure you’re adding your actives onto a clean surface to maximise their effects. The Eucerin DermatoClean Refreshing Cleansing Gel offers a gentle yet thorough cleanse to remove any makeup and impurities left on your skin. It does this whilst adding a boost of moisture with hyaluronic acid to leave skin feeling hydrated without any tightness.

2. Serum (PM)

Inspired by dermatologist hyaluronic acid injections and skin peels, this anti-ageing serum gently exfoliates skin to promote cell renewal and refine and smooth skin’s texture. Perfect for deeper set wrinkles, it also offers the same multi-molecular boost of hyaluronic acid to plump skin and reduce appearance of wrinkles.

3. Moisturise (AM/PM)

Moisturise morning and night with the same Hyaluron-Filler Day and Night Cream for a triple effect action which fills, stimulates and defends hyaluronic acid in the skin, to contribute to younger-looking and more hydrated skin.

Dermatologist-recommended skincare routine for 50s

In our 50s we tend to notice sagging skin and loss of volume in our face meaning we’ll want to customise our approach to this. Whilst support and replenishing of hyaluronic acid is still just as important, we additionally want to encourage collagen production and potentially remove age spots.

We recommend the Hyaluron-Filler + Elasticity range for over 50s anti-ageing concerns. This not only helps to plump skin and reduce appearance of wrinkles, but it also combats loss of elasticity to help lift sagging skin.

1. Cleanse (AM/PM)

Start with a cleanser that will prep your skin for serums. The DermatoClean Refreshing Cleanser can be used at this age to give a hydrating boost with a thorough but gentle clean.

2. Serum (PM)

To combat deeper wrinkles, follow up with the Hyaluron-Filler + Elasticity 3D Serum. This non-comedogenic formula contain active ingredient Arctiin to accelerate collagen renewal in skin cells. It still delivers the same plumping benefits from multimolecular hyaluronic acid molecules but also targets age spots using Eucerin’s patented ingredient Thiamidol, which acts at the root of hyperpigmentation to reduce and prevent age spots.

3. Moisturise (AM/PM)

Depending on whether your applying skincare in the morning or evening, you can finish your routine with the Hyaluron-Filler + Elasticity Day or Night Cream. These creams intensively nourish skin with a range of powerful active ingredients.

Hyaluronic acid, Arctiin and Thiamidol help to plump wrinkles, stimulate collagen production and improve uneven skin tone. Creatine also helps to boost collagen, whilst the SPF in the Day Cream will protect you from skin damage caused by sun exposure.

What age should you start using anti-age products?

When it comes to anti-ageing, prevention is easier than reversal. This is why dermatologists would often recommend starting in your mid-20s when the very first signs of ageing might begin to appear.

Eucerin’s Hyaluron-Filler range is recommended to anyone above the age of 18 to plump and reduce fine lines and deeper wrinkles.

This range will also add a hydration boost to the skin whilst supporting the levels of hyaluronic acid you produce which will help keep your skin looking youthful and vibrant.

Eucerin’s Hyaluron-Filler + Elasticity range is recommended for anyone facing these same signs of ageing, along with other symptoms such as sagging or loose skin, loss of volume and age spots. Aside from the hyaluronic acid supporting actives, this range also uses ingredients to support collagen levels target uneven skin tone for a bright and younger overall complexion.

Key anti-ageing ingredients

Active ingredients are the crux of any skincare regime so it’s important to focus on these when searching for products. Different skincare concerns will call for different key ingredients, so it helps to know what each is responsible for.

  • Arctiin: Accelerates collagen renewal in cells.
  • Thiamidol (Eucerin Patent): Eucerin-patented ingredient which is clinically proven to reduce age spots.
  • Hyaluronic acid: Naturally occurring in skin and reduces naturally with age. Adding this ingredient will help attract and lock moisture into the skin.
  • Creatin: Increases skin’s elasticity.
  • Saponin: Activates skin’s natural hyaluronic acid production.
  • Enoxolone: Decreases the rate of degradation of hyaluronic acid.

Lifestyle factors

Whilst having the right skincare regime can make a huge difference to slowing signs of ageing, it’s important to ensure your lifestyle habits are also supporting these efforts. There are a number of factors which can lead to earlier onset of wrinkles and sagging facial skin including the following:

Does makeup age your skin?

Whilst makeup doesn't seem to directly cause our skin to age, poor makeup habits can certainly have an impact. Not removing makeup properly before bed or comedogenic makeup products can lead to clogged-pores which is associated with ageing.

Be sure to be as stringent with your makeup products as you would be with your skincare to avoid using any harsh or disruptive ingredients on your skin.

Does alcohol age your skin?

Drinking alcohol causes vitamin depletion which can have an impact on collagen levels. If your body is less able to product collagen then this will reduce skin’s elasticity. Alcohol also depredates you and your skin which can cause skin to appear less hydrated and wrinkled.
